Renting without paperwork

eIDRent keeps track of who has what and until when. Identification through the Belgian identity card, returns with a single scan, and the personal data disappears the moment the item comes back.

Working with several people? At the counter, on the car park or in the warehouse, your staff enter rentals and take items back at the same time — all in the same list.

For iPhones, iPads and Macs

Everything that is out, at a glance

What you need

eIDRent runs on iOS and iPadOS 17 or later. Nothing more is needed to get going: a card reader and a receipt printer make the work lighter, but renting out, taking back and your product list work without them.

The receipt printer is optional: a thermal receipt printer with a network or wifi connection works over port 9100, and an AirPrint printer will do as well. Not sure which device you have? Settings → General → About shows the model and the version.

Three steps, that is all

  1. 1

    Rent out

Pick the item and the period: half an hour, an hour, a day, a week or an end time of your own. Whatever is out disappears from the list — you cannot lend the same go-kart twice.

  2. 2

    Read the eID

Place the identity card on the Bluetooth reader. Name, date of birth, address and portrait appear straight away, read from the chip itself. Optional: renting out without a card works just as well.

  3. 3

    Scan on return

Scan the barcode on the item or the QR code on the rental ticket. The rental closes, and everything pointing to the person is erased.

A ticket for every rental

A ticket for every rental

Every new rental prints a ticket straight away: your logo, your company details, the item, the start and end time and the duration.

At the bottom sits a QR code that points to that one rental. Scan it on return and the right rental closes — even when three identical items are out.

Run off your feet? Put the whole team on it

Everyone works in the same list. Your staff enter rentals and handle returns at the same moment, wherever they happen to be. Nobody waits for anyone else to finish.

All devices sign in with the same Apple Account — the one for the business. The data lives on each device and in the iCloud of that Apple Account — not on a server of ours. We never see it.

The card reader

You may already have one

Look in your cupboard or drawer first. Is there still an eID reader from the bank or the pharmacy? Plug it into the USB-C port of your iPhone or iPad — with a two-euro adapter if it has a USB-A plug — and the app uses it straight away. Any reader of the USB CCID class works, and nearly all of them are. Tested with the OneSpan Digipass 905, also sold as the VASCO DP905, at around € 13.

If you do have to buy one, these two have been tested and both work on iPhone and Mac: the Sitecom MD-1002 on a 60 cm cable, and the Xssive CR02 that clicks straight into the port without a cable. Both around € 15.

If you do have to buy one and you work at a counter, a Bluetooth reader is more comfortable: no cable, no adapter, and the port of your device stays free. We work with the Sipiro M BT 4.0, also sold as the FEITIAN bR301BLE. That is the model eIDRent was tuned with.

Without a reader the app works fine: you simply skip reading the card and rent out by name or anonymously.

The app itself is free to install. The first twenty rentals are free, so you can try it out in your own business first.

The Belgian national register number is never stored. The renter's data is erased automatically as soon as the item is back. What remains is the rental itself: which item, from when until when.
